You, like us, may love surfing, but find that your favorite surf spot gets a little chilly at certain times of the year. Why not use this as an explore to travel the world and catch some waves? Here’s our guide to surf destinations around the year, from January to December.
California: January
With more than 800 miles of gorgeous coastline along the Great Pacific, it is no surprise that the Golden State is one of the most renowned surf meccas around the world. California in January is a perfect season todon your Rip Curl spring suit for spots in Ventura, Santa Barbara, South LA and San Diego. You should expect blue skies, sunny days and large and consistent surf.
Mexico – Punta De Mita: February
November to March is when the waves are pumping by the Riviera Nayarit coastline. Punta De Mita is a luxury resort area and fishing village on the coast and is surrounded by spectacular natural beauty. Warm temperatures in winter with accessible breaks mean that this place is a true surfers haven.
Sri Lanka: March
Sri Lanka’s west coast is a big draw for wave lovers looking for tropical warm water and fun waves. The best season is between January and April,when the equatorial sun keeps air temperatures at about 30C and water temperatures around 28C.
The Maldives: April
The allure of Maldive’s turquoise waters, luxe vibes and crowd free waves. Isn’t that the dream? April is the ideal time to head over there and enjoy the surf. The season is from April until October and the largest swells will happen from June to September. Holidaying in the Maldives takes the word “paradise” to a completely different level.
Australia: May
There are so many good surf spots in Australia, it is hard to pick just one, particularly as the East Coast has seemingly endless waves. Summer months are hot and balmy, but the autumn months means constant swells, smaller crowds, crisp morning and the perfect off shore winds. If we were pushed to choose one spot, it would be Cabarita Beach in New South Wales. Home of beach breaks and a short drive from the breaks at Snapper Rocks and Byron Bay.
Costa Rice: June
Costa Rica is a destination famous for asuper chilled vibe with warm temperatures and consistent surf all year. It offers perfects waves for surfers of every skill level. Morning are sunny with occasional tropical storms in the afternoon. June is a great time to throw on your Rip Curl spring suit that has the ideal combo of great weather and regular swells.
Bali and the Mentawais: July
The most consistent and stunning waves on the planet, you can surf breaks in Indonesia most of the year, but the start of the dry season means Bali’s Bukit Peninsular begins to light up.
While the Mentawai Islands take a while longer to get to, the reef breaks that you find there are worth every minute of your travel time.
Fiji – Mamanucas Islands: August
Palm trees, friendly locals and toasty turquoise waters with golden sands as far the eye can see. What is not to love about this island? Diehard surfers tell you that the best time to surf in Fiji is whenever you can make it there! It’s best between April and October when the swells consistently roll in.
Samoa: September
The definition of an undiscovered surf paradise. The perfection of Indo and power of Hawaii, Samoa is an incredible tropical destination with awe-inspiring waves which will blow you away. Both islands attract swell all throughout the year, with reef breaks scattered on every part of the island.
Philippines: October
Hot and wet with high humidity, the typhoons in the North Pacific start to send strong swells towards the Philippines around August, so the month is a great time to start thinking of heading towards the Philippine islands.
Portugal: November
Charming culture, friendly locals, tastyfood an great waves. Portugal has it all and is an absolute swell magnet to boot. If you are just starting out it might be worth going in September and May, but pros should head over in November when the BIG bad waves roll in.
Hawaii: December
